Extending Storage In Consoles
PlayStation 4 To PlayStation 5
What can you store on a PS5 extended storage device that has been formatted? You can download PS4 games and add-ons straight to extended storage from the PlayStationTMStore, as well as transfer games from your PlayStation®4 system storage to extended storage.
PS4 games can be played directly from an expanded storage drive, freeing up space on your PS5 system storage for PS5 games. If you want to access your PS4 games from an extended storage drive that you previously used with your PS4 console, simply attach it to your PS5 console.
(Please note that PS5 games cannot be played via expanded storage at this time.)
Go to Settings > Storage to see how much free storage space you have on your PS5 console.
The built-in storage on your PS5 console stores game and saved data, as well as other data. If you don’t have enough space on your console storage, you can either remove existing data or copy it to one of the following locations:
Extra space for storage:
A commercially available USB drive can be formatted as expanded storage and used with your PS5 console.
Storage in the cloud:
Members of PlayStation Plus get access to cloud storage.
USB flash drive:
You can utilise a FAT or exFAT-formatted USB disc that is commercially available. Not all gadgets are compatible with your gaming console. The type of data determines where it can be copied.

How to install an M.2 SSD in a PlayStation 5 console
Why would you want to install an M.2 SSD to your PS5 console?
M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps, after it is installed in the PS5 system. This allows you to expand the amount of storage space on your PS5 console. You can freely swap games between the PS5 console’s storage, a USB extended storage device linked to it, and the M.2 SSD storage.
Xbox One S / X To Series X
If you have an Xbox One with an external USB 3.1 drive, you can plug it into an Xbox Series X or S and it will function right away. A USB 3.1 drive can also be used to store Xbox Series games, which can then be transferred to the Series X or S’s internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card and played (source).
